Storm in the Village - Miss Read

Fairacre and the neighbouring village of Beech Green are under siege by planners who want to build a new estate on Harold Miller’s Hundred Acre Field, and the inhabitants are vocally divided on the subject. As the schoolmistress, Miss Read is inevitably involved – but she also has more personal problems to deal with.

Her junior Miss Jackson’s unwise passion for a very unsuitable man, the niceties of defining categories for the flower show, and the ever-leaking and finally collapsing skylight in the schoolhouse are just a few of the problems she deals with in the course of another enchanting year in the company of one of the most observant recorders of a rural community.
